WHEEL BEARINGS

WHAT THEY ARE

The wheel bearing is part of the wheel assembly and connects the wheel and the axle  It comprises a set of steel balls or tapers in a metal ring  It ensures that the wheel moves round smoothly without too much friction and axial and radial loads are sustained when gravitating accelerating braking and cornering

HOW LONG THEY LAST

A wheel bearing can last from 85,000 and 100,000 miles but this will depend on the conditions of the operation and the quality of the bearing

WHY THEY FAIL

Wheel bearings can fail for a number of reasons including bad road surfaces driving through deep water impact such as accident or hitting the kerb dust or road salt and some car modifications such as larger or wider rimmed tyres and stiffer suspension springs or stiffer shock absorbers

INDICATIONS OF FAILURE

Noises like humming, growling or rumbling when accelerating or turning

When in motion a constant and loud grinding or whining noise

When driving over road surfaces that are uneven clunking noises

Excessive play and looseness in the steering wheel

Vibration from the steering wheel

Malfunction of ABS
